Analysis
A 4.7% weekly reach among 18-to-29-year-olds — compared to 11.8% for the 45–59 group and 11.9% for the 60+ group — reveals a substantial youth-reach gap for ARD Mediathek just weeks before the Tatort Online First launch. The gap is structural: younger Germans favour commercial platforms over public-broadcaster streaming.
Public streaming's youth problem in Germany
The AGF platform study 2026 found that nearly half of 14-to-29-year-olds go straight to a streaming app like Netflix when they turn on their TV, while 26% switch to a commercial streaming service when bored with linear TV — compared to only 11% who turn to a broadcaster Mediathek. The ARD/ZDF-Medienstudie 2025 showed that among regular streaming users, Netflix and Prime Video dominate the 14–29 cohort, with the ARD Mediathek at just 24% weekly usage. Against this backdrop, a weekly web reach of 4.7% for the youngest adult segment makes Tatort's Freitagspremiere — requiring registration and rewarding early adopters with a 48-hour streaming window — the most direct lever ARD has to increase habitual use among under-30s. Whether the policy converts curiosity into regular visits is precisely the question the pre-launch evening age profile sets up.

Methodology
Weekly reach is measured as the share of browsing-active German adults in each age band who visited ardmediathek.de at least once during August 2026, weighted to that age band's share of the German adult online population (18+). The reach rate is calculated within each age band separately, so each figure represents how well ARD Mediathek penetrates that specific age segment on a weekly basis — not a share of the total population.
