Analysis
Electronics, fashion, home & garden, and food & beverages all shared the same browsing-depth trough in early 2026, confirming that the February dip was a broad, cross-category signal driven by German consumer sentiment rather than any sector-specific shock. Fashion and food posted the sharpest rebounds through August 2026, while home & garden recovered earliest but flattened sooner.
Why food and fashion led the rebound
German online retail grew 4.3% across H1 2026, with everyday essentials, pharmacy, and a recovering fashion segment leading the expansion. Food & beverages e-commerce in Germany has been the fastest-growing product category — posting a 10.86% CAGR — as quick-commerce groceries and subscription models pulled more browsing sessions deep into checkout flows. In fashion, Zalando, Amazon, and Shein together intensified competition for German shoppers' attention, compressing the browse-to-purchase funnel even as macroeconomic headwinds persisted. Home & garden's earlier-but-flatter recovery may reflect a pull-forward of spring purchase cycles typical of that category's seasonality. The synchronised trough across all four verticals strengthens the case that the February 2026 dip in overall browsing depth was a genuine demand-side event. Methodology
Browsing depth is measured identically to the overall series: the monthly share of visits reaching a product-detail or cart-adjacent page, population-weighted to the active German e-commerce audience. Domains are assigned to one of four categories — electronics, fashion, home & garden, or food & beverages — based on their primary product classification. Roughly 7% of e-commerce domains carry no category tag and are excluded from this view. The observation window runs from January 2025 through August 2026.
