Analysis

Netflix's September 2026 German subscription price increase — the first to hit the ad-supported tier, which rose 40% to €6.99 — generated intense public debate, but browsing data shows no age group mounting a clear cancellation response within days of the announcement. Pre-hike and post-hike cancellation-page rates are broadly comparable across all measured age cohorts.

A rolling consent process changes the timing

Under German consumer protection law, Netflix must notify each subscriber and obtain explicit consent before charging the new price. That notification arrives roughly one billing cycle before the individual renewal date, meaning the pricing shock is staggered across the customer base rather than felt all at once on September 3. The overall matched 4-day comparison yields 40.1% pre-hike vs. 36.2% post-hike — a difference well within normal daily variation. Any age-differentiated churn response is therefore more likely to surface in October and November 2026, as billing cycles roll over. For context on which rival platforms users looked at after visiting the cancellation page, see the Disney+ vs. other streaming alternatives analysis.

Methodology

The chart compares the share of German netflix.com visitors per age group who accessed a cancellation or account-management page, contrasting a 14-day pre-hike window (ending September 2) with the 4 available post-hike days (September 3–6, 2026). Age is derived from self-reported birth year. The 14-day and 4-day windows are not directly comparable in absolute level — more days provide more chances to ever visit a page — so the chart is best read as a directional indicator rather than a precise before/after measure.
