News shows 32.9% median; entertainment shows 34.2%. Vertical lines span the interquartile range (25th–75th percentile), demonstrating substantial overlap and statistical indistinguishability. This engagement parity contradicts the perception that news is inherently less engaging on short-form platforms. TikTok weights watch time heavily alongside engagement metrics; videos that keep viewers watching until the end receive algorithmic boosts even if engagement is moderate. The near-identical watch-through rates suggest that when news creators adopt the narrative velocity and editing style of entertainment content, they retain viewer attention equally well—indicating a format challenge rather than an audience-appetite problem.Bar chart showing median per-user watch-through rate (watchtime ÷ duration, capped at 100%) for news and entertainment among TikTok news followers. Analysis

News and entertainment content on TikTok retain viewer attention at virtually identical rates. News achieves a median watch-through rate of 32.9%, compared to 34.2% for entertainment—a 1.3-percentage-point gap that falls within sampling variability. This parity suggests news content can compete for attention on the platform when crafted with the same editing pace and narrative hooks as entertainment, despite the news category's small overall share of the feed.

Methodology

Paired analysis among German TikTok news followers in 2025. Per-user mean watch-through rate computed separately for news (author in 99-handle allowlist) and entertainment (all other tracked content), capped at 100% to avoid replay artifacts. Restricted to videos 5–600 seconds long with watchtime > 0; users included only with ≥5 views per content type. Medians taken across users to neutralise power-user concentration (n=1,686 users).
