Analysis
In Q1 2026, the reach of price-comparison and cashback sites in Germany increases steadily across age groups — from 25.7% among 18–24 year-olds to 37.2% among 55–64 year-olds — a gap of more than 11 percentage points that inverts the intuition that younger, more digitally native users would dominate deal-hunting behaviour online.
Why older German shoppers lead the Schnäppchensuche
The pattern reflects a well-documented characteristic of German consumer culture: older cohorts tend to be more price-disciplined and more deliberate in their purchasing, a disposition that was amplified by the 2025 cost-of-living pressure. BCG's 2025 European Consumer Sentiment Survey found that German consumers broadly rank above the European average in reliance on promotions — particularly in high-consideration categories such as home appliances and electronics that skew towards 40+ buyers. Platforms like idealo and geizhals, which offer detailed product filters and price-history charts, are tools built for deliberate research, which naturally suits older, methodical shoppers more than impulse-driven younger users. For advertisers, the data suggests that check24 and idealo audiences are weighted towards mid-career and pre-retirement Germans with real purchasing power — not a bargain-hunting youth demographic. The overall reach trend these age groups contributed to is visible in the monthly price-comparison usage chart.

Methodology
Reach is measured as the share of German online adults in each age band who visited at least one of five price-comparison and cashback domains — idealo.de, geizhals.de, billiger.de, check24.de, or shoop.de — during Q1 2026 (January to March 2026). Age bands covered are 18–24, 25–34, 35–44, 45–54, and 55–64. The 65+ age group is included as a directional estimate only, as the sample in that band is smaller. All figures are calibrated to the German online adult population within each age segment.
