Review October–December 2025: Messaging, video and browsers reach 82–85% of online Germans; AI hits 46%

Messaging (85%), video and streaming (84%), and browsers (82%) form the daily-driver core of German smartphone usage. AI assistants — barely measurable two years ago — have broken through to 46% reach in their first fully measurable year, with ChatGPT at 34% and Google Gemini at 26%. Shopping and travel remain occasional-use categories, reaching 54% and 12% respectively, reflecting the habitual versus transactional nature of different app types.

Reach per category is the AGOF-weighted share of German internet users (16+) who opened at least one app from that category during October–December 2025. Source: Google Play Store app-use event stream. Categories assigned manually from Play Store taxonomy across the top 250 apps by panel reach. System apps, OEM shells, the panel app and rewards-app packages excluded. Panel: n=11,209, effective sample size 7,204. Reference population: 67 million German internet users (16+).
