Analysis
TikTok Shop Germany splits into two distinct buying patterns: high-value, low-frequency purchases in Food/Beverages (€43.42, 1.9 orders/buyer) and Arts & Entertainment (€42.17, 2.1 orders/buyer), versus high-frequency, low-basket categories like Apparel (€18.52, 3.1 orders/buyer) and Beauty (€21.87, 2.9 orders/buyer).
Why Apparel and Beauty drive repeat purchase loops
Globally, TikTok Shop's impulse-discovery model favours products with strong visual demonstration potential — a dynamic particularly powerful for Apparel and Beauty, where unboxing and transformation content shortens the repurchase cycle. Industry data shows TikTok Shop purchase frequency in Germany rose from 2.3 orders in October 2025 to 3.3 in early 2026, suggesting the platform is becoming a routine channel rather than a one-off. Food and entertainment purchases carry larger baskets likely because they reflect more deliberate, planned buys — occasional bulk additions rather than scroll-triggered impulses. The EU's March 2026 customs reform, which eliminates the €150 de minimis exemption, adds compliance cost for cross-border sellers in all categories, but its impact will be felt most acutely in low-AOV lines where margin is thinest.

Methodology
Average order value (AOV) per category is calculated as the weighted mean basket size across all orders in that category between March 2025 and June 2026, calibrated to Germany's online population. Over 98% of orders are single-category. Orders-per-buyer reflects the average number of purchases a buyer made in a given category over the 15-month window and is measured at the individual-buyer level.
