Analysis

The 35–44 and 45–54 age bands consistently generate the highest repeat-purchase rates on Amazon.de in 2025, with most consumable categories clearing 50% in both groups — roughly 13 percentage points above the 18–24 cohort on the same categories.

Settled households drive the replenishment economy

The age gap is widest in Food Items, Pet Supplies, and Household Supplies — categories closely tied to established household routines rather than one-time discovery purchases. German Amazon shoppers in the 35–54 range are at peak household formation and family-stage, making regular replenishment of everyday essentials a structural habit. Younger buyers (18–24) repeat at 35–40% on the same categories, reflecting less predictable consumption patterns and higher price sensitivity. The 65+ group partially recovers to rates comparable to the 25–34 band, suggesting that older buyers who do shop on Amazon.de develop routines as stable as mid-life cohorts. Brands targeting Kundenbindung on Amazon Produktkategorien should prioritize activation and subscription enrollment specifically for the 35–54 demographic, where the repeat-purchase payoff is highest. For the Subscribe & Save effect on these same categories, the lift is consistent across age groups.

Methodology

Repeat-purchase rate is calculated for each combination of top-10 category and age band among Amazon.de buyers in 2025 who have a birth year on record — approximately 75% of active buyers in the dataset. Age bands are derived from each buyer's birth year. Cells with fewer than 5 buyers are excluded. The same 90-day repeat window and order-day collapsing methodology applies as in the overall category ranking. Total observations across the heatmap exceed 27,000 buyer-category cells.
