What to do next

If your email is in a leak, these steps help, in this order.

  1. 1

    Change the password

Start where you reused the password from the leak. A password manager makes the next ones unique.

  2. 2

    Turn on 2FA

Use an app or a hardware key where you can, rather than SMS. A leaked password on its own often stops being enough.

  3. 3

Check where else it is used

If that password is still on important accounts, such as banking or email, change those first. Phishing that already knows your address deserves extra suspicion.

New leaks reach you in the app first

Free for everyone: we check your email regularly and automatically in the background and send a push notification when it appears in a new leak.

Leaks are only half the story

Even with no hits, your data often sits with data and advertising companies, such as your address or what you buy. Datapods Shield asks them to delete it.

What is a data leak?

A data breach check looks up whether your email was exposed in known leak collections. A data leak (also called a data breach) happens when someone who should not have access gets hold of stored user data, for example through a hacked server or stolen credentials. Email addresses and password hashes often end up on lists that get passed on. Names and phone numbers show up there too.

A leak does not mean someone is already inside your account. Attackers then have material they can try, such as phishing or selling your contact details. The result names the leak and the date. Next to that are the kinds of data that were in it. No hit only means the address does not appear in the collections this check queried.

  • A check shows whether your email appears in known leak collections.
  • It does not replace a strong password or 2FA.
  • Data at brokers is a separate problem. Shield sends deletion requests there.

Common questions about the leak check

Is the leak check actually free?

Yes. You can run the check on this page without signing up and without the app. Ongoing checks are free for everyone in the Datapods app: we check your email regularly and automatically in the background and send a push notification when it appears in a new leak. Datapods Shield, deletion at data and advertising companies, costs €7.99/month. * Free as long as 3 data sources are connected in the Datapods app.

Does Datapods store my email after the check?

For the check on this page we do not store your email, and we do not use it for ads. It is sent to Have I Been Pwned to look up known leaks. Have I Been Pwned only processes it to return the result. The privacy policy has the detail.

What does a hit mean?

A hit means your email appears in at least one known leak collection. That is a warning, not proof that someone is in your account right now. Changing the password and turning on 2FA are still the first steps.

How is this different from Have I Been Pwned?

Have I Been Pwned is in English and widely used. This check is also in German, and it can take you to Shield when you want data and advertising companies to delete what they hold. You can use both.

Does a leak check cover data brokers?

No. Leak databases and broker databases are different things. A check shows known leaks. Shield sends deletion requests to data and advertising companies, including mobile ad IDs.
