Analysis

Mobile air conditioners are the single most heat-reactive product category on Amazon.de: their buyer share jumped +193 % versus the June baseline during the July heatwave (1.16 % vs. 0.40 %) and an even sharper +403 % during the August event (0.36 % vs. 0.07 %). Fans responded strongly too (+144 % / +156 %), while sun protection barely moved (+33 % / +114 %).

Why mobile Klimaanlagen outperform everything else

Germany's housing stock explains much of the gap. Unlike Southern European or American homes, the vast majority of German rental apartments have no built-in air conditioning — making plug-in mobile units the only practical immediate solution during a Hitzewelle. The July 2025 heatwave peaked at 39.3 °C in Andernach on 2 July and drove the national mean to 35.5 °C, placing the event among the top-three hottest single days on record according to DWD. Sun protection, by contrast, follows a seasonal demand arc tied to UV calendars and leisure plans: it is stocked up in May and early June and does not spike with temperature extremes. This divergence between cooling gear and skincare suggests that e-commerce heatwave signals are driven almost entirely by acute discomfort — not general summer awareness.

Methodology

Buyer shares for each category are calculated against the same denominator: all Amazon.de shoppers with any physical-goods order in the respective window. Heatwave 1 covers 1–3 July 2025; its baseline is 1–30 June 2025. Heatwave 2 covers 10–18 August 2025; its baseline is 11 July – 9 August 2025 (excluding Prime Day week). Categories are defined by curated product-name keyword lists: fans (tower, desk, and USB models; PC and bathroom fans excluded), mobile air conditioners (portable units and window-sealing accessories), and sun protection (SPF creams, sprays, and major brands such as Anthelios, Photoderm, Ambre Solaire; self-tanning products excluded). The observation period spans 1 June – 18 August 2025.
